South Tipperary Golf Clubs
Clonmel Golf Club.
Clonmel Golf Club, founded in 1911, is one of the oldest golf clubs in the province of Munster. A rolling parkland layout designed by the renowned course architect, Eddie Hackett, it is a mature 18-hole par 72 course measuring 6,365 yards. The ladies course measures 5,516 yards, par 74.
Set in the foothills of the Comeragh Mountains with magnificent views across the valley of the River Suir and the rolling Waterford and Tipperary countryside towards Slievenamon, the scenery and the surrounding landscape will take your breath away!
Golfers will enjoy the many natural features of the course – the wooded nature of its surroundings, the fresh air of the elevated landscape, the views, the flora and the fauna that includes foxes, hares and fallow deer.
Unique features of the course include its undulating fairways, meandering streams, mature trees and testing greens all of which add to both the beauty and the challenge of the course.
The Signature Hole is the 14th (stroke index 3), a wonderful 185-yards par 3 played from an elevated tee down to a generous but challenging green. With out-of-bounds to the right, with a stream and a bunker to the front and sometimes with a swirling wind to contend with, the hole calls for an accurate tee shot and putting skill if a par or better is to be achieved.
Ballykissteen Hotel & Golf Resort
Des Smyth designed Golf Course
Complementing the Ballykisteen Hotel, the golf resort includes a superb 18 hole, 72 par Des Smyth designed championship golf course which was opened in 1993 and was formerly the famous Ballykisteen Stud. Nestled in the heart of the Golden Vale The clever design and suitability to all handicaps makes the Ballykisteen golf course an ideal venue for any golf outing. The golf course is set only minutes from Limerick Junction, County Tipperary in tree-sculptured surroundings against a backdrop of the Galtee Mountains. The golf course is constructed to the highest of standards distinguished by the superb quality of the putting surfaces. Smyth laid out each hole using the natural contours of the land where possible and incorporated an abundance of bunkers and water hazards which feature on 11 holes.
Symth himself puts forward the 15th as one of the signature holes at Ballykisteen – “probably the most difficult in the country; 230 yards from the back elevated tee to a green surrounded by water on three sides and out of bounds on the left, nothing but a perfect golf shot will do”.

Tipperary Golf Club
Founded in 1896 Tipperary Golf Club is one of the oldest clubs in Ireland. Originally located just outside the town in the Tipperary Hills the Club next moved to Crogue, then to Garnacanty before settling in its present location in Rathanny in 1939.From very small beginnings Tipperary Golf Club has grown in stature and numbers and in 1994 the course was extended to 18 holes. Facilities have been continually upgraded and a beautifully refurbished clubhouse was opened in May, 2001.
Over the years Tipperary Golf Club has produced some very fine golfers. Thomas F.Ryan set the ball rolling when he won the South of Ireland Championship in 1936. The Club’s most famous amateur, Arthur Pierse, has won 4 major championships, represented Ireland on over 100 occasions, played on Walker Cup and Eisenhower Trohy Teams, and was 5 times best amateur at the Irish Open.Of more recent vintage Pat Murray, Marion Riordan and Sarah Crowe have won International Caps whilst John O’Donoghue renowned as a great hurling goalkeeper, won Senior International Caps in 2003 and 2004.
