People have lived in the area for at least 5,000 years, but there is some trace of prehistoric settlements. The many ring forts show that the good agricultural land here in the eastern part of the Golden Vale was farmed extensively in the early Christian period.

The name of Clonmel is derived from the Irish Cluain Meala, meaning Honey Pasture, possibly referring to the fertile land of the area.
